It was meant to express my utter confusion at your description of it feeling like a fetish sim. Because while 2B is attractive and sexily dressed but she is never to my mind purposely framed as a sex object by the game. Cutscenes don’t focus on her body, even the in game camera avoids and even scolds the player for getting too low an angle. As a character she is never sexually provocative. I just don’t see it.
I google image searched because I know nothing about Nier: Automata other than that it is the name of a video game I will probably never play.
The character has a fucking tit window on her dress. WTF is wrong with you?
Ohh nooo her dress is sexyyyyy. Fucking grow up.
Don’t forget the high cut slit and stocking-boots and short skirt all there for anime fan service.
What Scott said… but also not what he said too.
Something doesn’t have to be super sexualized to be someone’s kink. 'member the nudienews from that one book. It exists in real life too and in both cases it’s an otherwise normal news cast featuring conventionally attractive women in various states of undress.
By your logic that’s also not fetishized. yeah?
What about all the porn on pornhub that just features people walking around fully clothed in public?
All that stuff makes me as uncomfortable as this game.
Then you have no eyes. All the fanboys are 100% fapping to this at home.
Uhhh… you just said youve never played it. I have, several times. As a -character- she does not act in a sexually provocative manner. People are going to get off on whatever character they find attractive regardless of how they are portrayed in the original media. I never said 2B wasn’t attractive, she very much is you’d have to be blind as you said.
To what extent is objectification assigned vs inherent?
In your eyes can the game not both be good and make me uncomfortable?
I’m with Naoza on this (except I could probably play it – boob windows make me jealous more than disturbed). There’s nothing wrong with a character who dresses in a way that can be read as sexual (see: Sailor Moon) but also I can see why someone would be uncomfortable enough that they wouldn’t want to.
Because my day isn’t pointless enough already, I’m going to jump into this debate a bit:
I kind of see both sides to this. Is 2b, the “main” character of Nier, dressed in a sexually provocative way? Absolutely. There’s no questions about that. Additionally, in the game’s universe, the only people who look like Goth maid/butlers are the Androids, everyone else in the game is dressed in sensible “rugged” clothing. There’s definitely something going on with the game’s creator that he wanted the main character to dress like a Gothic Lolita maid. Hey, it’s Japan… 'nuff said.
I will agree with @panfriedmarmot though that besides the character’s costume, there is nothing sexual about the game. The camera never purposefully lingers on her body or portrays her as a sex object. There is no titillation or any other kind of fan service. The game actually has more male “nudity,” if you want to call it that, than female nudity, of which there is none.
Overall, the game is completely unsexy, outside of the odd choice for costumes. I don’t know why the director chose Gothic maid outfits. Again… Japan.
No it just that a cool action lady in a sexy dress is probably the tamest of things I can think of to be so put off by that I find it baffling.
That was pretty much how I felt too
EDIT: This is even more popcorn gif
2B 's designed in a way that specifically emphasizes Japanese fetish stuff with maid cafes and other types of fan service even if 2B as a character in the game is never utilized in the same way it telegraphs/signals that type of thing to a casual observer. If she were sexy in less specific and niche ways then I think it would just be sexy action chick and not fetish kink.
Think of it like this.
How comfortable do you think the women who stopped or decided to participate less in this forum would feel if you were posting images of this character? Do you think it would make them feel more or less comfortable?
If you were selling a product, and put a still image of that character on the cover, who do you think is going to buy it? If you have many such image in your store, how will that make customers feel?
You may be desensitized to this sort of thing since it is admittedly, way less pervy than most these days. That says more about how far things have gone, like DoA volleyball territory situations. But just because diahrrea exists, doesn’t mean that solid poop isn’t still poop.
You’re assigning an awful lot of male gaze to women.
Couldn’t that tie into the Android’s purpose as subservient guardians? The idea that despite their inherent power, they are rendered socially inferior. This is further satirized by the fact that now that their masters are extinct, they have no reason to dress as they do but continue to do so out of blind traditionalism? (I don’t think the blindfolds on their costumes are an accident)
Bear in mind, this doesn’t preclude that the creator is also a pervert.
Like I said in my reply to them I’m just more baffled that something so tame could be so off-putting. If media makes someone uncomfortable I’m not going to insist they play or watch it of course, just in this case it’s making me scratch my head.
