oh, you did; I skipped the OddTaxi Episode, since I wanted to see that show with my friend.
So we watched this on Saturday and…it did not do what I expected it to do. If anyone is on the fence, give at least the first episode a watch, and preferably the first 2.
It’s not as good as She-Ra, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Season 2 drops November 5.
Inside Job premieres October 22.
Screencaps included.
I’m simultaneously very excited for this, and disturbed by how much the faces remind me of Ctrl+Alt+Del.
Were they working on both of these series so close together? I read… something… somewhere that this is all about Mattel and licensing and something something?
Honestly I think this one isn’t looking great, but it does scream “MOBA” to me.
I just hope this one pisses off the right people at much as She-Ra and Revelations did.
I think it looks fine for a kids show. The animation and character designs remind me of a Ratchet and Clank game, which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, and I think it’s actually kind of creative in how they’ve re-imagined some of the characters. I don’t think I’m going to watch it, but it’s not as terrible as the recent Thundercats reboot was, which completely deviated from that show’s origin.
I’m of the opinion that for a lot of these shows, like your MOTU and your Transformers (I’d toss Thundercats in there too, but am unfamiliar with the older or newer show and judge it mainly on how bad the fanboys acted): creators should not give a fuck what the fanboys want cos the fanboys are never happy. It’s like the fanboys want more of the thing but it better not deviate from the thing at all, ever. And not people that are kinda “eh” about it, I’m talking about the people that organize bot and harassment campaigns, just to be clear.
I like the look of this new show. I liked the Revelation show that came out and anticipate the second part. Not gonna lie, there are so many toxic dickheads on board for these older properties to fail that it makes me super happy whenever something comes out that makes them frothing at the mouth angry. It’s doubly good if the show itself is actually enjoyable!
I agree that creators shouldn’t care what the fanboys want, because like you said, the fanboys are never happy. At the same time though, if you’re going to make a new version of a classic cartoon, you should at least make your show somewhat similar to the classic. Additionally, there’s a difference between fans and fanboys. I consider myself a fan of many things. I don’t consider myself a fanboy of anything.
I enjoyed the recent Masters of the Universe. I loved everything about it from the character designs, which were spot-on, to the plot. I think the new He-Man show is fine, even if I’m probably not going to watch it, but if I do, there’s enough there that’s similar to the classic show that I’m fine with any changes they make. I actually like the updates to the characters in He-Man.
In terms of classic show done right, I think Netflix’s Voltron is pretty much the definition of a show that stayed true to the vision and theme of the original, but updated it for modern audiences. She-Ra is also excellent.
But for me, the recent ThunderCats deviated too much:
Original 1980s ThunderCats:
ThunderCats 2011 reboot:
ThunderCats Roar (2020)
As a child of the 1980s who loved ThunderCats, I was totally fine with the 2011 reboot. I actually enjoyed the show a lot and was disappointed that it was cancelled. I thought Lion-O looked like red-headed Cloud Stryfe, but whatever. They modernized the show and it was enjoyable. I think that the show came out too soon, and if it had been on Netflix, like Voltron, it would have been even better.
ThunderCats Roar, on the other hand, was completely different, and I just couldn’t get into it. I hated the character designs, I hated how goofy the show was, I hated pretty much everything about it. Maybe ThunderCats Roar wasn’t made for older fans like me. But if that’s the case, why bother reusing the IP in the first place? Just create an original show. But, if you’re going to call your show ThunderCats, and reuse those classic characters, you’re going to have to deal with expectations and comparisons. To not expect a backlash of some kind, when you deviate that much, is kind of naive though.
I get that feeling. I wasn’t necessarily targeting your statement, I just saw a lot online when I guess roar came out of grown men throwing tantrums over their childhood being ruined which…I mean it didn’t delete the thing they liked so idk what the deal was. Thundercats was included with MOTU and Transformers cos the fans seemed to be acting similarly, as far I could make out.
I’m just the right age that I was not the right target demographic for any of the TC runs!
There’s a difference between not liking something, or the direction a show is going, and throwing a tantrum and saying your childhood is being ruined.
While a lot of fanboys do the former, we tend to make fun of them so much that we overlook the legitimate criticisms and opinions of people who aren’t throwing tantrums, yet who still don’t like something. There’s a spectrum. I try not to lump everyone together at one end of it.
