I know nothing about League of Legends or the Runterra universe in general, but I love the art style and animation of that. I’d give that a watch even though I have no idea what’s going on or who that is.
I’m looking forward to the show. Have never been able to get into MOBAs but have really enjoyed most of the Runeterra/LoL animations they’ve produced. A longer form show that is allowed a narrative arc could be really cool.
I’ve been hoping for something like this for OW since nearly release.
The best thing about LoL is the commercials they do, if you dice there they are all mini stores about the characters using different artists for them.
Having never read the manga or watched the anime (two things that I eventually want to remedy), color me excited:
It’s a good way. The original series is 80 episodes. Three movies covers all the material you actually care about and a lot less time investment. A lot less filler robot fight of the week.
I saw that Netflix also has Char’s Counterattack and I’ve heard that’s a classic as well. Does that movie take place after the movie trilogy?
Yes. The three compilation movies cover the same material as the 80 episode tv series. Char’s Counterattack immediately follows, and is must-see.
Between the original Gundam and Char’s Conterattack there is two whole series Zeta and ZZ. I haven’t watched that far so I can’t say how much one misses by not seeing them, but I assume quite a lot.
You can watch Zeta if you want. I did. It’s long 50 episodes, and it feels longer. It’s often meandering and directionless. Lots of episodes where almost nothing happens. Characters just suffering in war, not knowing what to do. Zeta starts out being entirely about new characters, like Kamille. Then it eventually turns back to being about the main characters from the original Gundam series. But the events of Zeta aren’t really necessary at all to understand what’s happening in Char’s Counter-attack. You can read a summary if you want. Basically “After the original Gundam, they Gundam’d again.” There is a set of 3 compilation movies that sum this one up as well. I don’t know how they are, though.
Do not watch ZZ. Pretend it doesn’t exist. I’ve never watched it, and by all accounts it is awful. I’ve been told it has a silly and lighthearted tone more like a super robot show, as opposed to the typically serious and gritty Gundam series that preceded it. Plot summary: ZZ is what happened during the time that Char was absent. Then he reappears and counter-attacks in the movie. Amuro Ray also doesn’t appear in ZZ. Char’s Counterattack is 90% about the conclusion of the battle between those two characters, and since they aren’t in ZZ at all, you don’t need to see it.
The beginning of the Char’s Counter-attack movie introduces the current state of the UC Gundam universe. It was shown in theaters just as a stand-alone movie. You could even watch it having seen no other Gundam. As long as you understand who the characters are and what the different sides are about and such, you will know what’s going on.
On alternative take. Zeta is commonly praised a lot and heavily recommended. Sadly people rarely mention the compilation moves for it, which probably means they are bad. Also I’ve seen people say that ZZ is under rated, with people focusing too much on it’s lighter tone while ignoring characters and story. Also I’ve come to understand that Char’s Counterattack movie itself isn’t very good. Or at least gets mixed opinions.
I think the movie is pretty awesome and mandatory Gundam watching.
I finally got around to watching this and it was…not bad. I think Season 1 had higher highs, but it also had lower lows.
It’s only 8 episodes, which I found disappointing. 10 - 12 is a better count, IMO.
I have no real complaints about any of them, though the first episode (Automated Customer Service) was incredibly ham-fisted; it’s a John Scalzi piece, so it leans pretty hard into trite fluff that is not at all subtle. Meh.
“The Drowned Giant” seemed a little…odd, and was probably my least favorite. It’s based on a J.G. Ballard story, but it’s just…really kinda overwrought? It wasn’t bad, but I was like “OK well that was a thing I guess” when it was done.
The remaining 6 ranged from “solid” to “pretty good.” The themes weren’t terribly groundbreaking, and there are some pretty transparent references to existing properties, but whatever I’m cool with that. The ice planet episode was just a cool piece of worldbuilding, the cop episode was brutal and ended appropriately, and the desert albino episode was a reasonably competent story of finding companionship. The train episode was fucking perfect until the utterly unnecessary exposition at the end of the episode. Shoulda just ended it on “they don’t like fire, no they do not.”
The stranded pilot and the Christmas episode were my favorites; the former was a well-done isolated horror piece, and the latter was completely telegraphed but funny as shit so I didn’t care.
All in all, Season 1 is better largely because it had more material, but I would say the median episode in Season 2 is better than Season 1.
Worth watching, but not a “go watch this right now” thing.
If I had a nickel for every time Michael B. Jordan was a future CGI Pilot that got mauled by robots, I’d have two nickels. It’s not a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
(seriously though, go watch Gen:Lock; it’s a fun ride)
Maybe it’s because I binge watched this entire show during the recent heat wave we had here in the Pacific Northwest, but am I the only person that enjoyed the fuck out of Record of Ragnarok on Netflix? I mean, I know it was not “GOOD” per se, but it was so much fun to watch. I found myself stupid laughing out loud during just about every episode. But maybe that was just because the temp in my apartment was in the mid 90s and I wasn’t quite thinking straight. Still, gotta love a good death match show.
The one and only time I even heard of the show “Record of Ragnarok” was from this tweet.
There’s only one thing for sure. This show is either genius or complete garbage. It can’t possibly be anywhere in-between.
Ha! I consider Gerald a trusted source for many horny related anime things. Every time that character appears on screen, it’s ridiculous.
has anyone seen the new Godzilla Singular point show? it has some Shin Godzilla Vibes, and I’m super into it, but I’m only halfway through
I watched the whole thing. I geekbyted it on the show, didn’t I?
