Netflix Animated Shows

I’m on episode 5 of Great Pretender, bit of a rollercoaster.

Spoiler maybe

Cross-posting here and the Podcasts thread. On the latest episode of Slate’s Working, they interviewed Noelle Stevenson on creating a diverse kids show. This is a great interview talking about her original comic Nimona, and also all about She-Ra.

If you’re a fan of the show, just want to listen to a good interview, or are interested in Noelle Stevenson’s process, give this a listen:

I liked how Great Pretender ended.

Abigail is easily my favourite character.

Ronnie del Carmen has signed a contract with Netflix.

This man has quite the resume. Previous projects include The Prince of Egypt, Up, Inside Out, and Batman: TAS.

Holy cow, this show! I didn’t know anything about it and just saw it pop up as a recommended new show on Netflix. Watched episode one Saturday morning during breakfast, they are 16-17 minutes long and it was quickly apparent these were short vignettes that were going to be silly and fun, so it felt like an adult way to have a Saturday morning cartoon. Fun premise about a former Yakuza being a stay-at-home house husband and do the cooking and cleaning and shopping while his wife goes to work at the office. Unexpected, fun, a little silly. Then we watched episode 2 and nearly choked on my food laughing multiple times and want to just binge the rest of the short season (but holding back to ration the enjoyment). So far, A+ premise and execution of humor. The cat stories have a lot of potential, looking forward to see where they go with that.

Yeah, I watched it over the weekend and it was extremely funny. Definitely recommended. I do have two gripes with it though:

  1. The animation style is somewhat distracting. Comedies dont need great animation, but this show is really static, more like manga panels with maybe some mouth-flaps on it. I don’t usually have a problem with this. I watched and thoroughly enjoyed shows like Astro Fighter Sunred, Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san and Detroit Metal City that use a similar animation style. However, here it is a bit over the top when people talk while in weird poses such as putting on their shoes, or when the act of picking up a cat is shown in three panels that are scroll-wiped to one another. Supposedly this style was done at the request of the original creator.

  2. The title of the show in german regions is “Yakuza goes Hausmann”. Yes, three words from three different languages.

I don’t know if any of you are into League of Legends or the Runeterra universe in general, but this looks legit good:

Yeah loved the pastels (the medium not the color) art style that the trailer had. Also there was some really great body animation on Jinx’s breathing in that close up.
