I'm Saddened... (Board Games)

This apparently isn’t new, but TIL.

I think many people would agree that this would be a Hell to be feared.

Trying to see if anybody can help me out. I’m looking for a suggestion for online board games.

I’ve been having an online board game night with my family, and it’s somewhat of a struggle to find games that my mom can pick up on well enough to meaningfully contribute. Azul, Splendor, those games she understands. But games with more parts moving around, she doesn’t pick up as quickly. Puzzle-like heuristics she gets, but games with more complicated engine-building she gets lost on.

I may try the brand-name scrubbed off implementations for a browser game, but right now we’re working with Board Game Arena’s selection (because they have the best implementation for just jumping in and playing a game).

We’ve Played:

  • Roll for the Galaxy
  • Dice Forge
  • 7 Wonders
  • Potion Explosion
  • Sushi Go!
  • Bubblee Pop
  • Kingdomino
  • Seasons
  • Race for the Galaxy
  • Stone Age
  • Butterfly
  • Tokaido
  • Takenoko
  • Hanabi
  • Yahtzee

Stone Age, Race for the Galaxy are probably the prime examples of games she can’t reach an understanding of how to play. I walked her through Roll for the Galaxy, but we’ve played it a dozen times and needed to move on.

Let’s see… Carcassonne is on BGA and is easily recommendable (unless someone in your family already knows they don’t like it)

For Sale is on BGA, highly recommended (haven’t played it online though).

If you want to venture further afield… looks like Downfall of Pompeii is on yucata.de and Kingdom Builder is on Brettspielwelt. They’re both like… Takenoko-weight, don’t know how the online implementations are.

Love Letter is available through Steam (Asmodee’s whatever server) and BGA.

I love it and it’s easy to play.

Finished! by Friedmann Friese is free for iOS. Nice solo card game.

The only thing missing from this is that you can’t flip the deck over and use it like a flipbook once you succeed at sorting it, like in the physical version.

Unless they included that, in which case, well done.

I like this game, actually, I played a lot of the card version in the way you do with solitaire games, just idly listening to stuff in the evening. Ever wanted to roleplay a sorting algorithm?

I just now realized that, as a microbiologist, this is a literal description of my job, and now I’m filled with existential dread thanks.

Gonna stave off that dread with some FF.

Borderlands tabletop game coming from Leder?

Looks like a trad-RPG thing that Nerdvana & Leder are collaborating on: Borderlands’ Dungeons & Dragons spoof is being turned into a real RPG - Polygon

Not really my scene (maybe that’s an understatement, heh) but it’ll probably make someone happy. I’m somewhat unclear on what Leder’s involvement in any of it is (twitter says “development and production”)

Looks like another turn based miniatures on a grid dice combat game that gets called an RPG.

The Best Damn Nerd Show just interviewed HeroQuest creator Stephen Baker.

A reboot of the game has been fully funded on Hasbro Pulse. Baker is returning for this game and it will include a new bonus quest.

The digital version of Essen is happening, so expect a flood of board game news to come down soon. I tried nagivating the spiel.digital site myself to search for buried treasure. The interface is nightmarish.

I don’t think these will be good, but I did the aesthetic.

While you’re playing your Cayluses and your Agricolas, I’m playing some REAL games.

Oink has released some really good stuff. Also their games are small which greatly increases the chances of me buying them.
