The New Forum beta test - complaints and suggestions

Desktop Firefox with ublock origin is working for me. This is iOS Safari (with FF Focus enabled) or Focus itself.

I was able to replicate the issue only by enabling the “block other content trackers” option, which is not something I have enabled normally.

Seems that did the trick for me too. Guess I’ll ride with it off for now.

I don’t remember enabling that, so I wonder if something in their lists changed recently.

This is happening again. I checked, and “block other content trackers” was enabled again. I am pretty sure I haven’t touched it since turning it off last time.

But also, I disabled that option, no images. I disabled all 4 categories, still no images. If I disable Focus itself, images load.

Seems like an FFF issue more than discourse, huh.

Edit: I spoke too soon! Disabling Other does get images up. After rebooting the phone. Of course.

Yeah, the discourse does nothing tracker-wise. I even removed Google Analytics and everything. The only trackers are ones the social media companies include along with the embeds. If they’re getting correctly, or incorrectly, blocked, that’s an issue with your blocker. Nothing to change on the discourse side of things.

We have a Discord, but I promise, we won’t close the forum.

Discord is closer to a glorified chat room than a forum.

I personally like forums. It’s nice to be able to take your time and not feel rushed, lest your comment be buried in a rapid-fire conversation.

Still relevant in 2021:

Part 1:

Part 2:

This is so old it predates us being able to upload videos longer than 10 minutes.

TL;DW: Discord causes different behaviors from a Forum.

@MrPeriod’s scripts to auto-post episodes broke, dog.

Dang. What a pain.

I am going to file this in the suggestion box for beta geeknights.

Semantic web this website properly so that it will make my life easier to search using SPRQL and other information science tools. Also start a pipeline to get the podcast hosted on the Internet Archive, you would be surprised how many people watch your content on that site.

I am also a believer in the semantic web. We had FOAF stuff going on in college when Facebook barely existed.

Sadly, the semantic web is largely dead. You can put all the metadata you want into your web site, and it’s not going to accomplish much but increase your hosting and bandwidth bills by a few micropennies. I would love to be wrong about that.

There are plenty of other metadata type things we can do that will actually accomplish something on the modern web. For example, we can customize our Twitter card appearance.

A lot of these things are site-specific, like all the Google meta tags you can set and such, but I’m going to do as many of them as I can.

The forum doesn’t let me use the scroll bar anymore to jump to the latest post. It’s quite annoying.

I’m not sure exactly what you mean. It’s working for me on desktop and mobile.

I’m talking about this thing:

I used to hold down my mouse and go to any post I want, but now it does nothing.

Scott can’t log in, post garbo memes

Good luck with that.

How are Tweets loading for everyone? The forum doesn’t seem to be embedding them anymore, at least on my end.

Old Tweets are fine, but new ones are not. I attempted one and the preview just shows the link, and a new post in the Art Projects thread shows just that.

They’re working for me. Are you using an extension that could be affecting it?

Update: it’s not working for me now.

Not really a forum suggestion but could the Things of the Day links get put into the RSS feed?
