Randomizer Appreciation Thread

Ah, this is information I didn’t know. Now I’m interested again. Because

the more grotesque the better.

Man, if I’m already here, what am I going to be into in 4 decades?

I look forward to the descent.

This is probably very old news to some people, but I found out about it very recently. It’s called Super Metroid Arcade.

It’s a romhack of Super Metroid, obviously. The way it works is you start with nothing. Every time you go in a door, it puts you in a Super Metroid room at random. However, it only puts you in rooms that you have the items to deal with. For example, you won’t get put into a room where you need the gravity suit unless you have the gravity suit already.

When you get items, you get items. Since items rooms typically have one door, you tend to grab the item and leave the way you came in. Of course, when you leave you won’t be going back to the same room you were in previously. You’re going to a new random room.

It’s called arcade mode, because much like arcade games, you put in one “quarter” and then you play until you die. It’s endless. How many rooms can you clear before dying? How high a score can you get from beating enemies and eventually bosses? Etc.

What I think is most interesting about it is how it challenges you to beat various rooms with new combinations of items. For example, I played just now and was in the room where the floor is spikes, there is shallow water constantly raising and lowering, and there are grapple blocks on the ceiling. The only item I had to traverse the room was the space jump. That seems easy enough, but I had a hard time getting the space jump going because of the water and lack of gravity suit. I died on the spikes. That’s not a challenge I would have ever faced in the actual game. In the actual game I would have had more health to not die from spikes, gravity suit, grapple beam, etc. I also would have been able to re-open the door I came in and gotten my space jump started from outside the water.

If you like Super Metroid, and want to play a short burst of it now and then, but have it feel fresh, I recommend.

Cool idea, but it’s full of softlocks. First time I got stuck, I was ducked and jammed against a ceiling in an item room because it assumed I could morph into a ball when I could not. Second time, trapped outside the watery grapple/platform room at the entrance to the Wrecked Ship.

Yeah. Much like with the water/spike room I died in, it leaves me wondering. Was it a softlock or is there some pro way that I could have made it?

For those of you who want to try a brand new ranomizer, Combine the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time with Majora’s mask into one game!
