This interview with Shinichiro Watanabe is absolutely wild. He spills all the beans and doesn’t GAF.

Here are some highlights.

“As Takahashi’s personality is very gentle and friendly, his studio always had a very good mood. This was unlike Yoshiyuki Tomino’s studio, as he was always angry and screaming. The Layzner team by contrast was very friendly and we all got on very well. We often went out drinking and they would pay for me.

“When I first met Kanno on Macross Plus, the person that showed up just looked like a cute girl. Everybody was surprised and wondered if she was really the person that had sent us all this amazing music. We were even skeptical and that there might even be some kind of ghostwriter involved. However, when we went to the recording she handled everything by herself, so we were hugely impressed, but at the same time, her personality was very cute and interesting. So when we worked on Cowboy Bebop we created a character based on Kanno’s personality, but we didn’t tell her this so I don’t know what she thought of it.”

“Another thing is that the guy we hired to do the narration in Space Dandy, was actually the Japanese voice for Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek. So all the Japanese fans could recognize him by just hearing his voice. For the English version, I have no idea if they did anything similar.”

We gotta get a Shatner voice synthesis to redub Space Dandy narrator.

“So when I went to Los Angeles for the recording sessions, I told the team that if I saw that producer I would just punch him in the face. The producer ended up not coming to the recordings, which is unheard of.

I don’t follow this bit at all. Was he expecting a carbon copy? He takes issue with the casino? Is this a translation thing? Just being a weird artist?

[the new Netflix live-action adaptation] started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue. I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. It was clearly not Cowboy Bebop
