Zelda: BotW and Zelda in general

We’d been to the castle a few times already. Once for the memory quest and again to find the shrine inside the basement.

It turns out that we now wish we hadn’t been as completionist before going to kill Ganon. The castle wasn’t very dramatic because we’re just too high level to be dangerous.

We have full level four soldier armour, so full attacks by Lynels hardly knock off a full heart, and we’d stocked up on super weapons and five-banana-dinners, and I’m pretty good at Lynel hunting… so with all that I was god-level carving through all the monster enemies through the entire castle.

Juliane isn’t good in a sword fight, so finishes all enemies with a bow and arrow. We’d stocked up on something like 50 ancient arrows, 100 bomb arrows, and 200 shock arrows. She took out the guardians super easily.

Ganon himself was a challenge, but there was never a moment we thought we would die. It was just a matter of working out the boss fight puzzles, like when and where you had to hit, and the attack animations and how to avoid them.

So now I wish I’d gone to fight Ganon after only about 70 or 80 shrines. That way it would have felt like a real accomplishment. With fewer hearts, less powerful armour, and only the weapons we found in the castle itself, we’d have at least died a few times before the end, rather than killing all the Lynels and Guardians with a total loss of about 10 hearts, and Ganon would have felt actually dangerous.

Final thoughts on the entire game: Epic! One of the best games I’ve ever played! It’s pretty much the only reason we asked for a Switch as a moving-in present, and I’ve no regrets about the hours I’ve put into it.

Loved the exploration, loved the climbing, loved how the story worked into the gameplay and environment.

The shrines are all bite-sized dungeons, which is nice. I’d save them up so they didn’t continually interrupt the exploration, and then do batches of 4 or 8 at a time. That way it felt more like the longer Ocarina of Time dungeons. Deciding how much puzzling to do in any play session worked great for me.

Hated the camera most of the time, but learned how to avoid it fucking me up during fights. Often it felt like I was fighting the camera more than the enemies.

Just checked: 155 hours of Zelda over the last two months.

Yeah, my main regret in the game is not trying to loot the castle much earlier. Same with fighting Ganon. I wish I’d tried at least once before I was fully loaded.

I killed Ganon with a hail of 5x ancient arrows and bomb arrows. He went down so fast it was deeply anti-climactic.

But overall, it’s still honestly the best game in the entire Zelda franchise hands-down.

Thinking about this more, and reading back through some other opinions in this thread, I’m actually glad we did it this way.

I know myself, and I know that if I get the end credits of a game like this, and have done most of the main missions, I’m probably not going to go back and do other things. Making sure we got all 120 shrines before beating Ganon was a pre-emptive defence mechanism. Because if it was just me playing, and I beat Ganon at 80 shrines, I’d constantly be questioning my motivation to complete anything else.

As soon as I “solve” a game, it loses a lot of shine to me. With BOTW, there was always new things to solve, which was good for 150 hours of play! But really, once we got shrine 120, the only thing left to solve was how to spend all our money and stock up on arrows and big swords.

Maybe in a few months. I need a break from Zelda now, I think.

A short, enjoyable thread.

It’s Dynasty Warriors with Zelda IP.

So if Dynasty Warriors is your thing, this is definitely up your alley. But if Dynasty Warriors is not your thing, you can skip this one.

Hyrule Warriors is top tier Dynasty Warriors game, massivelly better than Dynasty Warriors 8, which is my latest touch on the main series.

I really like Hyrule Warriors, so this announcement was great for me. Looking forward to it and playable Urbosa.

Zero damage 100% record is set.

I’ve been playing BOTW again this last week, and after looking something up on YouTube, I started getting clip recommendations.

The final battle in this is crazy. Fighting two ice lynels at the same time, with zero damage, and coordinating the damage so they both die at the same moment, with a perfect nonchalant pose at the end. Very satisfying.

I finished my second playthrough of Breath of the Wild. It’s still an amazing game, even if you’ve done it before and know what’s coming.

The first time I went for 100% of the shrines and as many other side quests as possible. But then I regretted going to fight Gannon with super strong armour, all the hearts and stamina I could ever want, super high level weapons, etc.

This time I only completed seven shrines, the four to get of the plateau and then a few others to get some lightning-proof armour. Also I only collected three korok seeds, and did as little cooking as possible (three meals in total: some fire-proof elixir to get up the hot mountain, a hearty meal and a banana meal for more health and damage for when I faced Gannon). I then ticked off only the main quests: the four divine beasts, the 12 memories, and went to the castle to kill a big pig.

However, with all the help from the ancient champions, and with a few shield deflections, Gannon still went down like a chump. Maybe next time I’ll not bother with the divine beasts and head right to the castle after leaving the plateau, as all the weapons you could possibly need to kill him are right outside his front door.

After completing all the main quests, I gave myself an extra reward by completing one of my favourite side quests from my first playthrough… Tarry Town is complete!
