It’s funny, the service got dragged when it was first announced but imo Apple’s is the one I’d keep if I were limited to one for some reason. They just consistently have shows and films that I find entertaining.
Yup. So far Apple TV has had the biggest impact in terms of quality. For All Mankind, Ted Lasso, Severance, and (season one of) The Morning Show have all been the best TV shows we’ve watched in the last year or so.
Meanwhile, we’re getting through Schitt’s Creek (via Amazon Prime) at a pretty good clip. It’s fun to have a new sitcom for some mindless TV watching.
Oh enjoy! My wife and I love Schitt’s Creek. It is incredibly bingeable! And pretty quick; I think you could get through the run in a weekend if you tried hard enough?
I just started Severance and it’s better than people told me it was. I’m really enjoying it even if it is super creepy.
I’m looking forward to watching Slow Horses, the new spy show about the rejects/fuckups at MI-5, but I might want to read some of the books first.
I am on the last season of Blindspot in Netflix, which was on release until 2020. It’s an out of the box thriller drama that has made me addictive to it. And hence I decided to keep my username on the pseudo of one of the main characters from the show.
My recommendation
Spent the last few days binging the latest half-season of Better Call Saul. Finally saw the final episode of this half-season a little bit ago. I’m still feeling a huge mix of emotions hours later.
I don’t know what else out there is operating on this level. It’s just so patient, so tense, heavy and dramatic yet funny and frantic when it needs to be; but it’s always deliberate. Visual storytelling used in this show is setting the bar in my book.
Whatever these creators have planned after BCS I don’t know, but I’m already ready for it.
I’ve been watching Under the Banner of Heaven and I forgot how wild and cultish Mormonism is.
It’s a pretty good detective mystery and I’m liking the trend of mini-series being more of a thing. I really enjoyed Severance, but the cliffhanger ending of season 1 made me feel anxious about how much they could nose dive this if it goes on too long.
Lower Decks season 2 is pretty slick.
The same good stuff as season 1, but more. Enjoying it, they could definitely go harder if they wanted to, but it’s scratching the itch that other animations just can’t reach.
Bo Burnham’s Inside is a year old, and to celebrate the occasion, Burnham released an hour’s worth of outtakes from the special on his YouTube channel.
I’ve been watching Only Murders in the Building (S1). It’s a charming true crime parody comedy featuring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. I almost missed it because honestly, the promo was rather bad, but it’s a good chuckle with enjoyable characters.
Star Wars Obi-wan is decent enough. I know I’m not the only person who’s come to the conclusion that Disney controlling Star Wars has led to a very small “C” conservative view of Star Wars and the stories it can tell. I’m enjoying it, but it’s not blowing my mind or anything.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is absolutely fantastic. This is the best new ST show in ages. As someone who usually prefers long-form non-episodic TV, I’m shocked how much better this show is than all the other recent Star Trek shows, especially the more recent serialized shows like Discovery and Picard. Also, I do not understand how the same people can make Strange New Worlds, which is incredible, and Star Trek Picard Season 2, which was god awful.
The first episode of Ms. Marvel was great. Everything about this show from the casting, the tone, the writing, is spot on. While not as serious as the other Marvel TV shows on Disney+, at least not yet, this has the potential to be the best one yet.
Finally, I saw that a new season of Borgen is on Netflix. While I haven’t watched it yet, Borgen is one of the best shows that no one has ever seen, so if you’re interested in a Danish political drama about the first women Prime Minister of Denmark, check it out. It manages to hit the sweet spot on the Venn diagram where it’s not as naively optimistic as the West Wing was, not as cynical and Machiavellian as House of Cards was, and not as incompetent and derping as Veep was.
Yes! I have been actually looking forward to SNW episodes, although it still has some rough edges.
Borgen is quite a good show. I had no idea they were coming back for another season!
I didn’t know there was going to be a new season of Borgen either, but apparently when Netflix bought the rights to the show, they commissioned a new season. Season three came out in 2013, so it’s been over 9 years since then. I’m excited and curious as to where they’re going to take the show and how many seasons Netflix will make.
Really enjoying re-watching episodes of the 1960s The Outer Limits that I haven’t seen since I was a little kid. Watching an episode a week for the past several weeks and this shit is incredibly interesting and fun to analyze and critique. Every time an episode ends, my partner and I spend at least half an hour discussing the cinematography, special effects, and whatever message the writers were trying to convey. A lot of the messaging actually holds up pretty well 60 years later, while some of it(like the portrayal of women) is predictably dated and at odds with 21st century sensibilities. Still a very fun old show.
AMC Networks is premiering its first animated series on its new streaming service on September 1 called Pantheon.
They posted a preview clip, and holy shit, this looks really damn good!
I read the short stories this is based on and they were quite good. Didn’t know they were making a show but you’re right it does look amazing.
Recently watched Our Flag Means Death. I thought the first 3 episodes were fine. Nothing special: pretty dumb, slightly funny. After that it kept getting better and better, and I got so invested I couldn’t put it down.
It ended up being such an endearing gay love story. All camp, but also some real drama.
I loved it more and more as the season went on.
