What TV Shows Are You Watching?

About 10 episodes into Young Justice Season 3.

I was really looking forward to this since I loved Seasons 1 and 2 so much, but so far, Season 3 has just been ok. It’s been really scatter shot and the plot is all over the place. Hopefully they start to pull the various plot threads together soon.

Also, annoying stupid characters for the sake of plot device are getting very old. Why can’t writers come up with a new gimmick?

Devs looks amazing it’s definitely on my list. Glad to hear it’s not crappy.

Recently got Disney Plus Subs. I have watched good shows there. Mandalorian and world according to Jeff… there are plenty there but I always have an absolute dilemma of “what to watch” every night.

Movies are good too, but the library is not that big. I have watched togo, the new lion king and a couple of marvel movies.
The UK lib is very similar to whats on disney US. I thought it will be like other streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon. Bought a vpn for disney plus but I guess it’s useless now…

We just finished Bojack (finally: it stuck the landing!) and are now powering through Castlevania seasons 2-3.

Watching The Terror (Season 1) and Black Sails back to back.
I have lots of rum, lime juice, and pilot bread.

Watching She-ra now that the final season is coming out. It’s cute! Has enough things going on in it to keep me interested and it does not require me to put more brain fuel than I have available right now.

And scorpia is a reflection of my soul and I love her.

It’s got some good moments too. Catra is a fantastic villain. The Terrible Secret of Space ends up being a worthy payoff, and the show escalates rapidly after the first season.

catching up a friend for the finale tomorrow. Scorpia is absolutely delightful, but most of the characters in the show have really strong characterization. Despite the show being made for younger audiences, they took time to really flesh out most of the cast.

I’m so excited for the finale of the show, but I do hope they come out with some director’s commentary of the show(even though shows don’t do that any more and netflix does NOT like to put out DVDs). There are some subtle changes that show up after the first season, and I’d be interested to see what changes in the direction of the story happened and when. Although I am really bummed that neither of the upcoming he-man projects sound like they are going to link to this incarnation of she ra.

Looks like you’re getting somewhat what you asked for. I’ve muted the word shera from my TL, but I’ll be hounding Noelle’s twitter after my watch.

Even after my usual ritual of muting every word related to a show I got Shera spoiled even before I finished booting up my computer. :expressionless:

Oh well, luckily it was mostly contextless, still en route to watch today.

Another Star Trek show that I’m actually really excited about! Captain Pike and Spock were two of the best things about Season 2 of Stark Trek Discovery, and Rebecca Romijn was excellent as Number One, in the Short Trek she was in.

She-ra season 5, not really spoilers but still being careful about it.

That was such a standout season, it was several tiers above the previous ones and perfectly sold the threat of Prime as a villain, had an almost evangelion esque impending doom feeling. Almost all of the episodes were concise and built on each other perfectly, like a 4 hour movie. All of the threads left behind from all of the seasons were brought back to the front, each lending themselves to built up the last two episodes. Also, there’s a lot of references to Utena that made me very happy.

I found it’s hilarious having characters shouting that they’ll stop Prime, my dumb ass wanting to make anti-Amazon memes about it. I’m sure they will come.

She-ra season 5 definitely spoilers

Aww man, it was so good.Horde prime was definitely one of the better villains in recent memory, equal parts classic disney villain and overwhelmingly competent and dangerous threat.

I also think this season was one of the strongest. Normally each of the seasons use the first arc to set everything up and then the second half to pay everything off, but even the first half of this season felt pretty thick with payoff.

I also wasn’t sure that they were going to be able to pull off the catra redemption arc. Catra’s done so much at this point, that I didn’t think there would be any way for them to pull it off, but I was super happy to see they proved me very wrong. The obvious comparisons to Zuko’s ark will come up, but I feel like this one really nailed it, and will come to be one of the new gold standards of writing in animation.

All told, this show definitely ends on an A+ from me. the only thing I really want now is a series about the slice of life shenanigans that the cast would get up to afterwards.

Even more spoilers

That’s probably because it used the same formula, except the entire past season were the first arc. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think Catra’s arc worked because there was resistance from everyone, from Adora’s ultimatum when removing her chip. To the ice princess hilarious truck punch out of nowhere. But also Catra actually showed and explicitly acknowledged that she was working on her problems. A lot of people who liked this arc less pointed out that Catra set up war crimes with the portal and was “beyond redemption”, but they conveniently forget the one thing that also makes her arc work in my opinion: Glimmer was in the same position when season 5 started. Having activated what was essentially a galaxy nuke out of an emotional outburst due to feeling cornered and betrayed by the people she cares about, which was literally the entire story of Catra.

But really I love the parallels between Catra and Adora in this season besides the romance, Catra learning to let others in and be more selfless, while Adora cast aside her martyr complex and let herself do what she wants rather than what she thought she was destined to do.

Noelle said that she would be open to continue, but she would want to let the series breathe and stand up on its own first. I’ll probably rewatch this again at some point, specially now knowing that this ending was what she was working on form the start.

hahaha, I forgot about the Frosta Punch. that along with the immediate “Necks!” was delightful. I think my favorite comedic moments in this season(which is suprising, because this season got Dark) was Frosta clocking catra as soon as adora is done assuring her everyone will be happy to see her, “Adora, don’t go towards the light”, and everything involving wrong hordak

Tried watching the new Pendleton Ward show, and honestly it’s just…bad? It’s basically like they’ve just recorded an interview podcast, realized that a half a dozen other people already have it locked up, and decided to just kinda animate around the existing audio. An absolute snoozefest, and a bit of a let down after Adventure Time set such a high bar. I’ll keep watching a few more, but honestly, I don’t expect it to get better. Seriously, this is genuinely bad enough that it makes me wonder if Adventure Time wasn’t just a fluke, or an accident, or a product of circumstance.

I also did not make it through the first episode. It started out in a good direction for like, the first one, maybe two minutes tops. And then it jumps off a cliff. I imagine two college dudes getting high having conversations about whatever random bullshit. Like you do. And then taking a completely unrelated animation and having the two primary characters lip sync’d to the stoner dialogue.

I do somewhat enjoy the general mood of the show. It gives me the same vibes as some ‘90s shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast or Dr. Katz. Very late night radio feeling. Quiet despite lots of talking. Dialogue that is like real life, and not like a TV script. Great to fall asleep to. Not great at giving me a reason to keep playing for Netflix.

The thing is, the universe the show presents does seem to have some interesting stuff going on. If only they had just written a fictional sci-fi fantasy tale in that universe, I would probably be into it.

I don’t know enough about Pen Ward to criticize him based on this show. Very few artists have 100% home runs. Many great ones still have quite a few stinkers to their name.

What I do know about them is that they seem to not be the hard-working prolific type of creator you often see in animation. They burnt out on Adventure Time quite a few seasons in, and gradually left the work to others. The other things they worked on, they didn’t do much. Storyboard or write an episode or two here or there, that sort of thing. I think he is credited as creating Bravest Warriors, but basically didn’t work on it. Even this new show is co-created with someone else.

So yeah, people who make hits, especially big ones, get more at bats. That also means they’re forgiven for a few strike-outs. We’re going to need to see more of Ward’s oeuvre to form any kind of opinion, but this new show definitely doesn’t help it.

Yeah, I’m definitely not giving up on him. He’s still got more juice left, and this isn’t entirely without merit. He’s just taken a big swing, and whiffed it this time. He’s still got a few more swings before he’s struck out.

If it’s very extemporaneous and “realistic” dialogue even if it goes nowhere I might actually be into it, even if just as a case study, but also because I tend to get a kick out of that type of stuff. That type of chit-chat was some of my favorite parts of AT as well.

There are definitely hits and misses in the show. It occupies a weird space where it has cool visuals, but very conversational dialogue that would be best experienced as background noise (like it’s podcast origins). The fact that they are talking about a combination of surface level spirituality and like one level deeper means you’re not going to get much context unless you’ve already done a lot of related reading. It’s a bit strange as some episodes have really awesome animated stories and mediocre discussion subjects.

If you are interested in the animation, ep 2, 3, & 4 were my favorite, with the standout being 4

If you are interested in the subject matter, I think ep 5, 7, & 8 were the best, as some of the other episodes get too bogged down in riffing or talking about nothing.

It’s experimental as hell. I enjoyed it, but I also don’t think I could recommend it to anyone. I’d be interested if Ward chose a different podcast with some more charismatic hosts for another season (like say, Last Podcast on the Left), cause I don’t think you could squeeze anymore out of this format…
