One thing of note from this show… it was stated the reason Minneapolis/Minnesota are left leaning is due to lots of early-generation immigrants, and while that does help, it’s definitely not the only reason.
Minnesota has three other things pushing it that direction - a long history of union presence in the state and specifically in the iron range, a large Scandinavian population, and the presence of the Democratic Farmer-Labor party (DFL) as their local affiliate of the Democratic party, which incorporated the very progressive Farmer-Labor party.
It’s a pretty unique setup. There are four population centers leaning towards DFL - Rochester, Twin Cities, Moorhead-Fargo, and the Iron Range/Duluth. There’s a very strong history of labor rights, and strong Scandinavian-grounded culture that’s pretty unique amongst all states - a lot of help-your-neighbor, mind-your-own-business approaches to life, a bit of the collectivist-culture of getting through tough winters together.
