So this may be an odd question, but does the phrase “get bent” have any homophobic undertones? English is my second language, and I always took “get bent” as a less vulgar version of “get fucked”. However, I used the phrase recently in a bit of anger, though I didn’t want to be too offensive, and the recipient called me a homophobe because of the phrase, which seemed odd as I believe myself to be absolutely fluent in english and have never heard about any homophobic connotations to the phrase, using the language regularly for more than 20 years or so.

Professor Google says it’s origin is related to “going on a bender” AKA doing drugs, getting drunk, and if you’re strictly adhering to 60s definitions, engaging in homosexual acts.

If someone asked me not to use that language, I would comply; but much like the word “dumb”, what was once a strictly defined slur has culturally watered down into a more general insult.

I wouldn’t considered it homophobic, but it’s also not my determination to make if it’s offensive to LGBTQ+

Among kids slinging insults in my junior high school, the connotation for ‘bent’ was ‘not straight’ - so I guess it depends on the person’s experience?

Bender is a slur here (UK) for homosexual. We still have Futurama’s Bender and the Last Airbender but certain demographics still made fun of those things. I remember being in the cinema when a trailer for the Last Airbender came on and it ended by everyone laughing at the name which was very uncomfortable.

The other use is when someone says “Don’t get all bent out of shape about it” meaning “don’t get too upset about it”. As far as I can tell that isn’t a reference to homosexuality. Pretty much all other uses of “bent” or being “a bender” is a reference to homosexuality, either homophobic or not.

So how’s “and then they went on a 3-day bender” interpereted? I always just chalk it up to the equivalent of saying “and then they went on to get completely plastered for 3 days, and all that would naturally ensue.”

Bent can also refer to corruption. “If you bribe the foreman he’ll sign anything, he’s bent.” I think that comes from crooked.

On a 3-day bender wouldn’t set off any homophobia alarms. Completely different context.

Which anime is more notorious for filler: Nadia or Naruto?

Nadia has one large block of specific filler. Naruto is nearly constant filler as each battle takes several episodes to resolve.

Nadia is forgotten except to The Olds. No one remembers that show.

So probably just Naruto.

We refinished some outdoor furniture that came with our apt. We took it with us when moving because we figured we had invested several hundred dollars in maintenance for furniture that had been left by the previous tenants. The landlady wants them back by the end of the week and I’m not sure what to do. I’m thinking of asking for reimbursement on the paint job if she’s adamant about keeping them. Not sure if there’s some tenant laws for or against us on this.

Naruto has 720 episodes (original and Shippuden combined), Nadia has 39. Odds are that Naruto can fit more filler in it.

Though what I want to know is, what is filler? In Naruto discourse, I remember it meaning the episodes and storylines that anime original, padding to give mangaka time to make more of the source material. That definition can’t really fit Nadia, as it’s anime original story. So I guess filler could be anything that doesn’t advance story or develop the characters. But even that, I feel, can get hard to actually define and murky.

Episodes 23-34 of Nadia are filler.

It’s not really spoilers to read the episode descriptions for episode 23, 34, and 35.

Basically in episode 23 they shipwreck on an island and decide to just stay there. What follows are the infamous island episodes. The plot that you actually care about it effectively completely forgotten. Instead, it’s just the characters doing episodic nothing for 10+ episodes. Then in episode 35 the main plot comes back to get resolved.

Objectively yes, but I think “filler as a proportion of total show” is a valid analysis too.

Granted, I think that’s probably still Naruto. You can have multi-episode fights that aren’t entirely filler, but it’s definitely a stereotype for a reason.

Personally I think Nadia actually takes the cake, due to the impact of the filler. While it is a lesser amount overall, because of how most fans watched it in the west it was tougher to put up with. Naruto was mostly consumed by western fans through fansubs and it was kind of throwaway, or at least by many binge-watched at least to a point. Nadia on the other hand was popular in the tape trading days and filler is much more troublesome when you get like a couple of episodes on a tape that you had to wait on for weeks or months.

Furthermore, while Nadia has slipped a bit into obscurity, when it is mentioned, almost always the topic of filler comes up. Naruto on the other hand has a more relevant legacy outside of being heavy on filler.

Terrific point. Going through the hassle to get Nadia fansubs, and then getting like 4-5 tapes full of trash is extremely sad times.

Right. It’s the old anime about Boruto’s dad.

So we started an online folk singing night. So far we have only had one guest to our chatroom at a time. When we lead a song we hear a lag but the person on the other end doesn’t because they are responding to our lead. So the lag is invisible in one direction.

If we end up with more people joining we would lose that and the lag might be a problem to everyone. Is there anything we can do so that we can sing together even if it doesn’t work for all of us.
