Now That Donald Trump Has Lost

I know this forum isn’t usually the place to post half hour video essays but this one gets at some of the nuance of how, basically it’s ok to simultaneously think that deplatforming nazis/qanon/whatever folks is good, and that perhaps tech companies have too much control over how communication on the internet occurs.

It definitely is.

Twitter is starting to apply its ToS to political accounts more generally.

Trump’s term in office ends with a bunch of pardons.

Giuliani, Trump’s family, and Trump himself are not on the list.

There is a lot of work we need to do. But seriously, celebrate today. This is real. Things can start to change for the better.

I’ve definitely said to Rym at least once something along the lines of “What if the president just had their friends do crime and just pardoned them all?” Real life became indistinguishable from parody yet again.

Thank you for this headline, Vice. This was what I needed today.

There’s a Bernie meme going around today, and it got me thinking.

Everyone is like hey, Joe Manchin is way powerful now. Being ostensibly the most conservative Democratic senator, assuming all votes are along partisan lines, he can stop anything that is too left-leaning.

But by that same logic, Bernie is right there with the same one vote. If something isn’t socialist enough, Bernie can stop it just the same. They gotta make both of these old white dudes happy to pass anything, along with, you know, all the other Senators and the Vice President. Don’t be shocked if there are situations in the next few years where they need that tie breaking vote and Kamala has opinions.

The cronies that Trump pardoned before he left his office can still be prosecuted.

Now he’s losing his own properties.

Isn’t that because he signed an agreement specifically that Mar-A-Lago would never become a private residence?

In theory, this is true, but in reality, it’s not a very realistic possibility. The Washington Post has a great opinion piece that addresses this, among other things:

Opinion: Please, Joe Manchin, use your powers for good!

"But if you can pass bills with 50 votes, then the 50th vote has all the power. He can demand anything he wants, whether it’s goodies for his home state or just bills that reflect his particular priorities and preferences.

While in theory any Democrat has that power, in practice most of them don’t, for the same reason that the Progressive Caucus doesn’t have the influence among Democrats that the Freedom Caucus has among Republicans: In the end, the liberals won’t vote against legislation that helps people, so their threats to blow up worthwhile bills aren’t credible. The Freedom Caucus can make that threat because they’re legislative nihilists."

If there’s a bill that helps people, but isn’t progressive enough for Bernie, he’s not going to torpedo the whole thing. He’ll grumble, and talk about how it’s not what he wanted, but he’ll end up voting for it because ultimately, Bernie Sanders wants to help people, and while he might profess otherwise, when it comes to where the rubber meets the road, the perfect is the enemy of the good.
