KPop - aka Only Scott Cares - aka Not as Good as Metal

“They’re sisters” lol. Yes, the 8 hour delay was very strange. I don’t know about the censor thing. You would think they have a process in place for getting those things cleared up earlier in the process.

As excited as people are for this, my guess is that it wouldn’t have happened if Wendy hadn’t been severely injured in that accident. We would just be having another Red Velvet comeback right now. No photo or video of Wendy has been made public since then, so it’s pretty worrying. We have received audio though, so she can still talk and sing. That’s good, but it’s been over 6 months already.

The latest dirt in the KPop scene is all about bullying scandals.

The original scandal was T-ARA back in the day. But at least based on the publicly available information it appears to have been fake? I don’t know all the details, but the TL;DR that I have gathered is that a member joined the group, was a pain, claimed the other members bullied her out of the group, it was a lie, she left the group, but the group’s reputation was severely damaged by the whole thing.

Then more recently we’ve seen bullying on social media. Most notably Sulli, RIP.

What we have coming to light now are situations more like the T-ARA one, only appearing to be real. This time the group is AoA and their leader Jimin left the group.

Similar incidents are also coming to light in smaller/unknown groups.

An idol group is, after all, a group of kids. They didn’t know each other at the start, and were lumped together by a company. Of course bullying is not acceptable anywhere, but it’s obvious in hindsight that an idol group is an environment that is ripe for it. Sadly this won’t be the last such incident we see.

Let’s talk about YUKIKA.

YUKIKA is actually a Japanese woman who was doing some minor stuff in Japan like a little bit of voice acting, modeling, etc. Then in 2015 she moved to Korea. In Korea she was part of an Idolmaster related thing called Real Girls Project, but that had a short shelf life as it was just a promotional kind of group. She then went on the competition show MIXNINE, which was a whole debacle in and of itself, and ranked 34th. She officially became an extremely minor figure in the world of KPop.

In February of 2019 she released her first solo single NEON. She actually got to perform it on a few music shows. The song was not a big hit, but over time it got attention from a certain crowd. It’s city pop vibes really hit with good timing. If you look at the Internet communities, she benefited from a lot of crossover. City Pop, Future Funk, KPop, and JPop people all at least took notice of her existence. There isn’t a lot of new music in this genre being released now, and nostalgia for it is peaking.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67jSYCSrnE4

Despite being at a small company, it at least appears they continued to work on promoting her and getting her work. Although she was done promoting NEON she was very active on social media. She even went to KCon and had a little booth. She has uploaded some covers and other things to YouTube. Eventually released another song, Cherries Jubilees, but didn’t really promote it much. Usually these smaller name people from small time companies you don’t hear much from, but YUKIKA remained active. That’s a good sign that the company is not the worst.

This strategy seems to have worked! YUKIKA seems to have been rising lately, and the announcement of her new album really moved things along. The YUKIKA Discord had almost nobody in it, and almost no activity, but it’s been getting several new members every day for a week or two. I’m seeing posts about her in several relevant communities get attention. She’s still a relative unknown, but the upwards trend is a good sign.

Today her album was released. Of course it doesn’t have a ton of tracks, but honestly more than I expected. They did the usual thing of filling it up with some different mixes of her existing tracks and the new title track “S(e)oul Lady”. Overall they stuck with the City Pop genre, which is a smart move. Definitely good to be the big fish in the small and fertile pond than try to take over the KPop world.

If you like a City Pop vibe, check out YUKIKA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=942NkXvAtAM

Interesting side note. One track from the album will be missing on international streaming sites. The company actually went through the hassle to explain the situation to fans in several languages. That’s another good and refreshing sign that the company got ahead of it, and was extremely open with fans with this kind of information. Most companies, in all industries, would just not say anything leaving an information vacuum which would be filled with doubt, anger, and rumor.

It’s been about a month since I’ve posted here. There actually have been a lot of releases in that time, but none of them stood out to me as mega hits. Even a lot of my favs like GFriend came back with Apple, Hwasa came back with Maria, but none of it was really different or new. Just more of what you expect from people you already like.

I have been watching a lot of newer less popular groups to see what they are up to. Most of it is… not great. While some are better than others, all their music feels like clones of other existing KPop groups. Like here’s five new boys with another banger and some sick dancing.

It’s interesting because it’s sort of the opposite of what you see in other artistic fields. In gaming, the small indie developers are the ones that innovate and have new ideas. The big names are about big budgets a polish, but not making major innovations in gameplay.

In KPop, although there hasn’t been much new just recently, the big groups have the loyal fanbase to support them. They can try a new concept or a new genre to see how it goes, and survive to release another song. The smaller groups are just trying to stay alive, so most of them mimic existing successful groups.

That being said, there are two absolutely huge things that are coming out effectively right now.

EXO used to be the boy group at the literal top along with BTS, but clearly fell behind at some point in the past few years. They also lost members to military service, which BTS has not (yet). So they put together an all-star crew of boys from all their top groups including EXO, Shinee, NCT, and WayV. They called it Super M. I may have posted about them before? Super M released some music earlier, but now they are really making their big push with this comeback. They are doing the pre-release single thing right now, and they performed it for GMA.

https://youtu.be/MHoxVWPcYBc

BTS on the other hand, has been hyping up their new release “Dynamite”. Just last night I get in bed and open the YouTube app to see what’s what. I notice this highlighted video at the top of my subscription page. By sheer luck it was the premiere of the Dynamite music video that happened at midnight. I didn’t even know what day it was coming, but I was there for the premiere by complete chance. If you want to see it, here it is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdZLi9oWNZg

The big thing is that apparently, this premiere alone, meaning people who watched it along with me, simultaneously at midnight, had 4 million viewers. 4 million unique people watching this for the first time at the same time. No other premiere of a YouTube video even comes close. Until now first place was held by a BlackPink music video that didn’t even reach 2 million viewers at its premiere.

This reminds me of back in the day when Michael Jackson premiere “Black or White” with a special program after The Simpsons in '91. I watched that at the premiere also. Good or bad song, I kind of like treating a new music video release from a top artist as a big event.

I forgot one thing because it happened while I was typing.

The 20th anniversary of BoAs debut is coming up. I may have talked about her here before, but I might do so again. They are releasing a special series of “Our Beloved BoA” content on SM Station to celebrate her and her career. The fourth one just dropped right now, and it’s a cover of BoA’s Milky Way by Red Velvet.

https://youtu.be/BxZVxFGTQNU

What’s particularly notable is that this is the first time we have seen Wendy since the accident. It’s only been 8 months, but for some reason it feels like 8 years. Like, she literally disappeared. Hasn’t been seen in public even once in all that time, not even one photo. I think there were maybe one or two brief audio messages from her, and that’s it. Now here she is singing in a music video. Good to see!

Ok, something crazy is coming that can’t be ignored.

There was once a KPop duo named CocoSori. They released the kind of silly playful quirky kind of music along the lines of Crayon Pop and Orange Caramel, but not as good as either of those.

Exhibit A:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHttanRj6VU

The group obviously was not very successful. Then came a lot of drama. I can’t even explain all the drama, and I really didn’t care to dig into it. Basically Coco left on bad terms. She made all kinds of YouTube videos with accusations about how the company dumped her and supported Sori. I just really don’t want to touch any of it with a 20 foot pole. Curious people can Google it.

End of story, Sori is alone at a company that still isn’t successful. They have no money to produce music, so like a lot of lower tier KPop performers, she goes the crowdfunding route for comebacks. This time she’s using Kickstarter, but Makestar is usually the preferred platform for KPop.

Oh yeah, also Sori abandoned the quirky concept. She switched it up to doing more mainstream sexy boring KPop stuff.

Why suddenly bring this all up? Look at this teaser image for Sori’s next comeback.

'nuff said.

Initial S turned out to be Initial M for “meh”.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCYrDLrfWCQ

Lovelyz has a new song “Obliviate.” They are trying really hard to get away from their original cute concept, and this song isn’t bad. The problem is that it is no longer has any unique voice. In trying to get away from being themselves, they became just another KPop group in the crowd. They should just embrace who they are and keep doing more songs like A-choo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TArBtJ0IwCc

And holy shit the Super M song is GOOD. Their previous releases were kinda meh. The group has members from SHINEE, EXO, NCT and WayV, and this actually sounds like someone took the best songs from each group and smashed them together. I think it borrows from EXO’s sound a little bit more, but no complaints.

Also, I love this music video. It concentrates on the choreography, which a lot of music videos shy away from, but it manages to be a lot more than just a static dance cam. Usually music shows have really bad camera work that leave fans asking for them to just have a static shot so we can see what’s going on. In this MV they managed to have a very kinetic camera that enhances and highlights the choreography that doesn’t leave you begging for them to zoom out so you can see what you’re missing.

Oh shit.

We got some stuff going on.

BTS finally puts on an NPR Tiny Desk concert

Also, BLACKPINK is PUBG and BTS is Fortnite.

But the big one for me today is EVERGLOW’s new track. LA DI DA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeI992mvlEY

I did not expect the synthwave power. Recently rewatched the Tron movies, so this one poked me right in my old man '80s bone. It’s going directly into the playlist. Gonna check the other 3 songs on their mini album also.

BLACKPINK has released their first long-awaited album that actually has a significant number of tracks on it. This increases the size of their discography by a very large percentage. The title track is Lovesick Girls.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyRsYk0LyA8

But the banger is Pretty Savage.

In other news I want to talk about this thing called Idol Star Athletics Championship, or ISAC. It’s a television program that MBC broadcasts usually twice per year. It airs during holidays when people are off work and are at home to watch. Almost like football on Thanksgiving for KPop fans. The concept is that tons of idols from different companies all come to the same gymnasium to compete in athletic events, like it’s a field day at school. Fans root for their favorites, and it’s rather wholesome and interesting.

It’s quite similar in many ways to celebrity basketball or softball games that typically make themselves a part of NBA/MLB All-Star Weekend celebrations. However, add in a bunch of idol stuff that isn’t maybe entirely as wholesome.

First of all, you have a somewhat troubled history with injuries. They kept changing the sports over the years to reduce injuries.

Secondly, since so many idols are all in the same place at the same time you get a huge positive in terms of the idols being able to socialize with each other. Fans get to see lots of crossover between favs in different groups that rarely interact. Idols actually get time from their busy schedules to chill with other people in their industry, since the program involves a lot of waiting around when not participating. Rumors say this is a big time when idols get to meet and start dating and such. However, there’s a creepy aspect where some fans feel they have to monitor their favs to make sure dating does not happen.

There’s also, of course, a lot of minor drama related to which idols win which competitions. Who shows up, and who doesn’t show up. Idols from effectively completely unknown groups showing up and winning because they happen to have a very athletic member. And the best part, the drama of sport and athletic competition. Like when Irene from Red Velvet broke the camera in the center of the archery target.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4CqoRV6qmM

Obviously an event where so many fans and idols fill up an indoor gymnasium was not safe. So what did they do for 2020? They changed up the whole show and replaced it with two competitions. One, an eSports competition. Pretty cool since Korean already loves eSports.

The more important thing is that the second competition was a DOG AGILITY COMPETITION. A selection of idols who have dogs brought their dogs to compete. And Moonbyul from MAMAMOO famously has THREE CORGIS.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IELh16qBeEQ&feature=youtu.be

And here are the results. If you search I’m sure the Internet will soon provide a video of the event with English subtitles.

I’m constantly harping how nobody in KPop these days is doing the Orange Caramel concept anymore. It feels like around 5-10 years ago there was a lot of pop art, quirky, humorous concepts going around, but since Orange Caramel and Crayon Pop died, there’s almost none.

WJSN is a girl group with too many members. I’ve never been a big fan of any of the tracks they’ve release. Today they launched a sub-unit called Chocome with their first track “Hmph!” I have to applaud them for being bold enough to go for that pop art styling. Sadly, the song is just kinda meh.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ixa9dRD2bY

I’m hoping that they keep trying, though. Orange Caramel started out with Magic Girl and it took them a few years before they were able to produce a masterpiece like Catallena. I’ve probably posted them before, but it’s pretty much impossible to overshare. This is the level of power that we’re looking for.

I searched and noticed I mentioned AKMU only once in this thread, and only briefly. Let’s go deep on them, because now is the time.

Akdong Musician (AKMU) are a brother/sister duo. I think they come from a missionary family, their parents took them to Mongolia when they were kids. Not sure exactly how many years they spent there. Along the way somehow, they became musical prodigies. They can both sing and dance very well, but Chan-hyuk the older brother is an incredible songwriter. Su-hyun, the younger sister, is ridiculously good at singing. In 1994 they appeared on the show KPop Star 2, and won first place. They signed to YG, and have been putting out music ever since, though not as frequently as we would like. In Korea they are extremely popular.

I would describe their artistic concept as “two good and very talented kids.” Imagine like, the two best performers in high school putting on the high school play. No offensive material, but extremely high quality.

Chan-hyuk went out for his military service a couple years ago and people were excited. Is Su-hyun going to release some solo music? There were rumors he wrote a bunch of songs for her to choose from before he left. Spoilers: she didn’t release even one song. Did some other stuff like radio and YouTube, but no music. So sad. People were hoping they would leave YG as well, but that doesn’t seem to have happened either.

But wait, now that he’s been back awhile NOW we finally get the Su-hyun solo track. Welp, not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Better late than never.

The song is great, but not the kind of thing I’m going to run on repeat. However, the concept and music video is 100% my style. Also, check the lyrics, I like the message of the song a lot as well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GywDFkY3z-c

In other news, NCT released a new full album. It’s mostly NCT U, with a few tracks from other NCT units as well. I gotta say, I was meh on NCT up to this point. A couple good tracks, but that’s about it. This album is really a turning point. I like a lot of the songs on here. It’s very in line with SM’s signature style, but that’s not a bad thing. I’ll probably be paying more attention to NCT now.

Dingga, fish, ice cream, MAMAMOO

Unlike the US, you can be quite easily sued in South Korea for writing hate comments online. In response to the suicides of celebrities who were on the receiving end of awful comments, the amount of lawsuits of this nature has increased dramatically. Entertainment companies and celebrities are suing the pants off of their haters. Here’s a video from two lawyers in this line of work explaining how it goes down.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMNZ1cQKCIk

This is absolutely a freedom of speech issue. The government is punishing people for speech. But is it really limiting people’s freedom of expression? Based on the explanation it seems that you can’t get in trouble just for expressing your feelings or ideas. It’s only when words become actually harmful that the arm of the law comes down. Basically what I’ve been asking for, the “shouting fire in a crowded theater” to be interpreted more broadly.

Korean also has the unique circumstance that very few of their major online platforms allow people to have truly anonymous accounts. Citizens have national ID numbers that they have to use for signing up to things, even video games. I remember we couldn’t play Korean MMORPGs in college because we didn’t have IDs.

Now that the lawyers over there are going full steam, I will be very interested to see if it has a positive impact. Will the Korean Internet become a kinder place? It hasn’t yet.

Twice is back continuing the current synthwave trend. I honestly think EVERGLOW did it better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM4CkVFmTds

Ok, so SM entertainment has had very few girl groups, but almost every single one has been simultaneously legendary and tragic to some degree. They have finally announced their long awaited new group. The first one since Red Velvet six years ago. It’s called Aespa.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0CXJR_ZbDE

I was taking a mostly wait and see approach with this. I wasn’t going to say anything until they actually debuted with a song and music video. But then this incredible news just hit.

This is either going to be hot garbage or a completely new revolution in pop music. Hatsune Miku in a group with actual people? The Roger Rabbit of KPop? We are in for some truly wild shit.

EDIT: OMG. This isn’t fake. This is really what they are gonna do.

Oh dip this is gonna be fun.

They said long ago they were in the business of making new culture technology, and whatever else they’ve done, they’ve delivered.

Because they know when they are needed MAMAMOO came back today with a five track mini-album, and that’s five new tracks since the pre-release single DINGGA is, oddly, not included.
