If you write closed source software, you can mostly get away with violating free software licenses, no problem. Just take the source from some GPL program, even modify it if you need to, and who can prove you did it?

Unless there’s a source code leak.

If the GPL were perfectly enforced, Nintendo would be required to open source Dr. Mario 64 and all other games and software that they did this with.
