Good guy Vettel?
“The rear wing is broken in half. Do we have a spare?”
“Uhhh try this”
Best race of the year so far, by far! It’s good to be back on a proper race track again with a wide road and fast corners.
Yes, what a race! Silverstone has always been a good track, lots of good races there. It is putting in serious consideration for my favorite track in F1. Currently that has been Spa in Belgium but it’s starting to get hard to choose between them.
The way this race unfolded, the potential seriousness of the 1st turn accident aside, is something that would be excellent to be able to replicate reliably in F1 but I don’t see an easy way to do it with rules that won’t just be gamed by the teams (as is understandable that they would & should). But having a fairly late in the race incident that shakes up team and individual strategies that results in lots of wheel-to-wheel racing and positions swapping back and forth nearly all the way to the end… Thrilling! I don’t know if the crowds are more vocal or spread out to the right areas or the broadcast microphones are better positioned compared to other tracks, but all weekend I took note of how much the crowd noise reacting to the on-track action was pleasantly audible on the broadcast.
Vettel is retiring. Let the 2023 silly season begin!
One of his reasons for retiring was climate change.
“It’s my passion to drive a car,” he said. “Every time I step in the car, I love it. When I get out of the car, of course I’m thinking as well: ‘Is this something we should do, travel the world, wasting resources?’”
That was quicker than I expected:
Silly season is over in THREE DAYS! Alonso heads to Aston Martin, I’m guessing Oscar Piastri moves up from reserve driver to the replace him at Alpine. Makes a lot of sense.
The only seat left open is… Latifi leaving Williams? Who is going to “win” that drive?
Okay, silly season is actually continuing, and sillier than I expected. Oscar Piastri says he WON’T be driving for Alpine next year!?!? Despite the team announcing him as their 2023 driver?!?!?
In that case, where does he think he’ll be driving? Williams? McLaren?
Ricciardo out, Piastri in, apparently.
The silliest of silly seasons.
This has been an exceedingly long and dumb silly season, but it’s slowly coming together. Just two seats in the back marker teams (Haas and Williams) to fill.
Well, Max Verstappen won the title again.
What happened with Lewis Hamilton? He isn’t even first in points for Mercedes.
It’s an off-year for Mercedes after a massive regulation change, and they have the third/fourth fastest car.
Hamilton will be fine. He’s been beaten by teammates before (Button and Rosberg) but only one year each and he usually wins out in the long run. I’m not saying Russel won’t also be a challenge in the future, but their race pace is similar enough to show it’s mostly down to luck who is ahead at this point in the season.
Dramaaaaa
Does this confirm the end of silly season 2022?
Here’s an interesting video about making the Las Vegas Formula 1 track, with some permanent sections and then making a street track work:
It took me until half way through the video to realise the guest is, I think, an ex-boxfriend of an ex-girlfriend of mine. But there were two Carstens, both sons of the two owners of Tilke, so it could have been the other Carsten.
Either way, my ex also worked for Tilke back in the days they were finishing up Shanghai and planning Singapore. My only connection is that I gave all my crazy ideas for formula 1 circuit design to one of the lead track designer, and to my knowledge only one of them was ever made in reality.
If my employer tried this I would sue them and also quit.
Also there’s only 20 guys. Lewis Hamilton shows up in a Black Lives Matter shirt, what are they going to do, put him in car jail?
They could stop him from driving. Fine him. etc.
