Fail of Your Day

I am looking ahead in my calendar to see what events I can attend soon. See an [E] event that I have been looking forward to for months…it’s on the same day I am required to work. FUCK

I only just learned about the transpose special paste type in excel at 35 years old. Technically a win for me right now in terms of time and effort saving, but fail in the sense I’ve spent 10 years in IT and application support not knowing about it.

There’s always more to learn about excel.

One of my favorite things to ask when someone tries to pitch me a data science project is just “explain in detail why this can’t be done in Excel by one very motivated person.”

Most requests evaporate.

Having worked at a large e-commerce company, one of the largest in the mid-2000s, that refused to pay for real reporting software, I’ve built some wild shit in Excel. Every now and again I try to built something dumb and needlessly complex in it.

Note to future me: DO NOT pick up someone from the airport right before you need to do an interview. They will take their sweet time and you will struggle to recover.

Going on a train, planned to listen to podcast via headphones. Fell right before entering train, headphones flew off my head onto tracks. Lost a good $400 pair.

OMG if this ever happens, ask the train employees for help. It happens all the time. They have grabbers and can recover items for you safely.

I asked too early for a grabber filled out an incident report and will wait to see the outcome. Thankfully outside of a bruise I am feeling ok

I was just fired from the FCC, if anyone happens to know of a job that would fit an archivist, librarian, IT, or something in that orbit please get in touch.

What that fuck? That seems like something shitty happened…

I got the “I was not a good fit in the role” meaning that over 3 weeks of intense training and making project plans, I was not working hard enough according to them. I am taking the rest of the day to myself, but tomorrow will ask about the part-time job I had to see if I can come back (since most likely I should be able to resend the resignation letter) and start the great job hunt of 2024 in earnest with a clear head.

Oof. Sorry to see that.

My wife has been with NARA since 2009-ish in a variety of roles, so I’d recommend looking there based on your post. There’s a big digitization push afaik so quite a few technical jobs depending on your location!

The firmware on a computer monitor will ONLY work on display part, even when there is a HDMI and DV port on the back of it. Day 3 of not being able to get work done due to some of the most bizarre it hurtles.

I don’t understand what you are saying here. What do you mean the firmware won’t work? The monitor always has firmware. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t turn on.

It turns on, it recieves a signal but the splash screen tells me that the HDMI and DVI ports are disabled and to only use display port.

Ok, so I don’t know what that has to do with firmware. I’m guessing nothing in the monitor settings lets you enable or disable the ports? Some monitors these days let you control them via software. Does the manufacturer provide that kind of software for that model of monitor?

It’s a Dell so I am assuming that when they bought it they either locked it down or just came out that way. Was able to get it to work with a DVI to VGA connection, so it’s good enough for the short term.

I setup a PDS for Bluesky on a VM. I then accidentally broke the VMs configuration and had to rebuild it. I then had to re-setup the PDS, effectively forcing me to create a new account on bluesky.

It’s fine, but annoying.

It’s Christmas Eve and the power is out across the neighborhood.
Merry fucking Christmas
