Civilization VII

I played one era of Civ VII. There’s a lot going on, so I can’t make too many in depth comments. But I can say the following quick first impressions.

It’s really nice not to have to deal with workers. So much less busywork, so much more mental energy to focus on meaningful decisions.
The influence point system, as a concept, is really good. I have to play a lot more to fully understand it and judge it.
There are definitely some UI issues. Town focus took me a long time to figure out.
Trade routes are either a UI problem or something else is wrong with them. I’m investigating.
The explicit settlement limit is really nice. No longer do you have to judge when you should expand, or how much. The number is explicit.
They really need to bring back the settings to speed up animations.
The AI attacked me. I started building a ton of units. I kicked their ass. Then they begged for mercy and offered me actual territory. This is good.

I only got to play 30 mins after installing late last night before bed, but I do agree the UI needs improvement, but there is just so much to learn, its exciting to finally be playing a new civ game again and one that has made a lot of interesting changes to boot.

One of my fave video essayists did an overview of changes in 7 vs previous edition base versions.
