Sarbrina Ionescu scored 37 out of a possible 40 points in the 3 point shot competition. That’s in 70 seconds.
That’s more than any person ever. The previous WNBA record was 30. The NBA record is 31. That’s a pretty big gap, so you can’t imagine anyone else is going to top it for quite awhile.
If people start hitting 40s, they might have to add more balls and increase it to 50 or something.
The 3 point contest format is kind of lame for pros I think.
What I would prefer: start at the top of the key. Every shot you make, your line moves back a foot. Winner is who has made the deepest shot in X0 seconds.
I think the 3 point contest is a way better sport than it currently has credit for and visibility and accessibility. It only happens once per year per league and only a tiny number of players can even take part.
If this was the “Fix a Sport” thread I’d propose making it a fixture of every NBA game. During the half time break, have one player from each team go head-to-head. It doesn’t have to be the same player each match, so everyone could have a go through the season.
Keep stats over the entire season and in the end the best team gets a trophy, independent of how well the team did in the actual NBA games proper.
This could help with promotion, live attendance, etc, but also allow for a wider variety of players to get the spotlight each week.
Also it would only be a matter of time for someone to hit 27/27 baskets in a row in a live competition. That would be like the hole in one, the 9 dart finish, the 147, the perfect pitching game, the golden set, etc.
NASCAR car overtakes Ferrari at LeMans.
Yes it’s not a strictly a race legal NASCAR car. Yes it’s operating in the LeMans experimental class.
Still…
