What did everyone who went to MAGFest think of the Indie Games they showcased this year?
Two games in particular stood out for me this year:
Fling to the Finish
The Last Hex
Fling to the Finish was a really charming and fun/silly two player game, where each player control a ball-type animal connected on a string. The interesting thing is that both players use the same controller, with each one using a different analog stick. My friend and I played it and really enjoyed it.
The Last Hex was also really fun to try. A deckbuilding rogue-like, similar to Slay the Spire, I enjoyed this game a lot, especially as it seemed to have more RPG elements than Slay the Spire. While the games are similar, I think there’s room in my Steam library for both of them.
What games really caught your eye or enjoyed?
We had a lot of fun with fling to the finish.
It really was just a charming fun game. I could definitely see Fling to the Finish being popular on the Switch.
MAGfest this year was half good and half me being extremely annoyed with shitty aggro nerds.
The key event that pretty much ruined an entire day for me was some fucking dork trying to steal my fursuit head.
I haven’t seen people acting out like this since high school. Too many edgelords / alt-lite with no chill, and no obvious or available escalation path to stop it like [E] at PAX. Providing a phone number to call event staff on your badge isn’t even close to good enough. I have 0 faith in the efficacy of the enforcement of MAG’s harassment policy.
It must have hit an inflection point this year because we swapped a few stories like this that happened in public MAG spaces. I watched it happen multiple times on multiple days while walking with Anthony, both in and out of costume. Having been to MAGFest for the past 6-7 years… it was fucking weird. We talked about how after this year, MAG is the only event where he feels like he needs a handler in costume.
During a conversation Rym mentioned that the attendance of MAGFest is ossifying / ageing, which does not seem correct… or only partially correct. The culture is slowly drifting hostile relative to previous years; there are either a critical mass of new bad actors, the same people are just getting shitty, or we’re behaving in a way that attracts them more than in previous years (I think I can rule that out).
I am lucky that I didn’t see any of this. It does worry me to hear that others were encountering this problem. :\
I’d agree purely based on my observations, but we also both know that we’re very much not the kind of people shitlords shitlord at.
Good:
One Step from Eden. Finally, someone’s doing something with the MMBN battle system. Looks super fun, and the devs gave me and Will cool pins when we ran into them at Nandos.
I felt much less FOMO-type anxiety at this con than I have in a while, based on my new philosophy from East.
Watching a high school friend perform on the main stage.
Grace’s Mandarin across the street. Top notch, but expensive.
Bad:
I planned poorly with regard to timing on many things, and also thought BWI was far closer than it was.
Ugly:
Realizing first-hand that all that savings you get on Spirit really is false and watching it evaporate as I checked bags and bought a soda.
Even more depressingly, having a better flight on Spirit than I did on American.
@SkeleRym Your rare game mechanics is online via MAGFest, but I need to figure out how to.make the camera better for next year
I have video we recorded as well. I just haven’t edited yet
