GeekNights Monday - Tech News Not-Roundup

Expanding on the Russian Hacking topic, is there a full show in something like, “The Current State of Global Cybersecurity” ?

Anything that is worth defending, has the money to defend itself, and has capable humans defending it is already well defended.

Everything else is basically wide open.

You’ll basically never be able to break into Google accounts without social engineering or such. They have money, brains, and the will to defend their systems. Notice how Google doesn’t have customer service, and we always hate them for it? I still say they should have customer service, especially for services that pay out money, like adsense/adwords. However, the only valid reason for not having it is that they can’t be socially engineered. It’s a huge security hole.

Just looking at Verizon, also a big company, their security is shit. Your account can be compromised with a phone call. Look how many major retailers have their payment systems compromised. Real security is achievable, but is rarely deployed.

T-Mobile has an optional account security option where you set a password/passphrase on your account. Customer Service isn’t supposed to do anything if you don’t provide it. I’ve set it up. It’s not clear if it helps, but it probably can’t hurt. At the very least, it’s a line that should be easy to train their Customer Service reps to not cross.

Are you still open to doing a pro wrestling episode or has that ship sailed?
