Formula 1

It’s down to the wire for Vettel in the drivers championship… and he gets a three place grid penalty for speeding under a red flag during a practice session.

Seriously, can he not go a single race weekend without fucking up? Hamilton deserves to win this season no matter what because he’s making the competition look like amateurs. If I were him I’d be embarrassed on behalf of Vettel for being so far ahead.

This is a very interesting video:

Two totally different setups for straight-line speed vs cornering speed, and within six one hundredths of a second by the end line.

Kimi!

“Oh thank you guys, fucking finally”

Best grand prix, best driver, best quotes.

Yup, a real fun race! So much for me (and everyone else) thinking Hamilton would wrap up the championship by the end of the day.

The pace of the Ferrari this weekend is back on par with Mercedes, if not ahead, and that qualifying performance by Hamilton shows he really is just the best at one lap fast.

Pretty fun video, which shows the story of the season: the Ferrari cars usually as good as the Mercedes, and regularly faster, but Vettel keeps messing up and Hamilton just the best ever at qualifying and one of the best in the rain.

Just two more world championships to match Schumacher!

He’s 33 - how old do F1 drivers stay in the game?

Kimi is 39.

I’m sure it’s not just a physical aging thing that would get in the way though. It’s mental. Just how much effort it takes to stay sharp for an entire season. Rosberg managed it for one year, then retired mainly due to the stress. It’s not just competing against the other drivers either, but having a multi-billion industry resting on your performance.

But Hamilton seems to organize his life around maximizing fun while not working, and it seems to be working out for him. If he can keep distracting himself with music and fashion and movies and his jet set lifestyle, there’s no reason to think he doesn’t have another five or six years with Mercedes.

Michael Schumacher drove into his 40s, and I believe Fernando is right around 40. Helio Castroneves and Tony Kannan drove into their 40s in Indycar, and Mario Andretti drove in Indycars into his 50s. I doubt we’d see an F1 driver in their 50s, but drivers can last a long time if they keep their reflexes and vision. The bigger factor for Lewis right now is that Mercedes needs to keep producing a car that’s close enough to the best that his talent can take him the rest of the way.

That controller looks awesome.

That facebook video of the camera getting a bucket of water right to the lense is amazing. Materials science is fascinating.

Fun facts, this technology is old as hell. They’ve been using it in the bridges of ships and the observation windows of CNC machines for years and years.

Seriously?

AT the bridge of ships there’s a huge circular piece of clear material spinning so fast all the time and not tearing itself apart?

Like I know nothing at all of this technology when used for this purpose but I love flywheels as a technology and with those things, there’s 2 major stresses on the material, radial and hoop stress and they’re made of metal and they still don’t scale because eventually the hoop stress tears them apart. Not only that but flywheels are suspended in a vacuum and don’t ahve to deal with air and water and all that noise.

What I’m trying to say is this, despite being old, is cool as hell.

I wouldn’t say huge - the biggest one I’ve seen is about a foot in diameter - but larger than those lens-covers, yeah. They tend to spin from the center rather than the edge, simply because it’s cheaper, easier, and more rugged, but it’s essentially the same technology. They’re great for keeping snow, water, oil, and whatever other contaminants from blocking your view through a window. They normally call them Clearview screens, or gyro windows, or spin windows. And yeah, it’s cool as hell.

Obvious missed opportunity for spindows.
