Encryption - GPG/PGP

I understand the like… social reasoning. What I’m not quite getting is the math. As I understand it, both public and private keys are composed of primes and if I take the message my private and your public I just multiplied all the primes together. I don’t really get why I cant just do the opposite of multiplication to this and get the message back out.

This doesn’t really matter, it’s just me musing and being unable to remember what I encrypted 6 months ago.

I don’t think this has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum or podcast yet: Researchers found vulnerabilities in OpenPGP and S/MIME (which I’d never heard of before) that allow an attacker to see the text of the email.

It’s not actually a fault in the encryption itself, but in the way it is used on emails in particular. If you were to encrypt a message on your local machine, paste the encrypted text in an email, send that to someone who has the private key, then you are safe. This is only when using the OpenPGP S/MIME software on your email client/server to make life easier.

There are some additional subtleties to it, such as the big problem is when you set your email client to auto-decrypt the mail. If you do everything manually (copy/paste on send and receive) you should be fine. Oh, and if you don’t use HTML email, you’re also safe as it requires inserting malicious HTML into your email.

The exploit also requires someone to hack the email server in order to inject malicious HTML into your emails in just the right place.

In a nutshell, in order to be exploited, the hacker needs to first compromise the email server to insert an open HTML IMG tag into the email. This open tag starts with an address to a web server run by the hacker but is never completed. It will then rely on the HTML rendering engine of your email client to basically “paste” the decrypted contents of the email as the end of the IMG tag, so you’d have something like this:

The exploit is certainly something that needs to be fixed, but like most computer security news, it was overhyped by the non-security-savvy press.
