Butter: Belongs on the counter or in the fridge?

Storage: fridge
Cooking: will take out for room temp

My parents mitigated cat licking by keeping the butter in the microwave, and later a bread box.

I live in Seattle where it almost never gets warm enough to melt butter when left out on the counter so that is where mine stays. I do use a small ceramic ramekin to help keep the butter from melting due to heat from the stove and other kitchen activities. Have never had a problem with mold or bugs in all the years I’ve used this method.
