Actually Listenable Christmas Music

#42

I’ve done a ton of research in the last week on Christmas music so here’s my top five of all time and my top five of this year

  1. Thankful Heart from A Muppet Christmas Carol
  1. Christmas Must Be Tonight – Blue Rode (The Band cover)
  1. Happier New Year – Chris Farren (feat. Lee Corey Oswald)
  1. Santa – Lightnin Hopkins
  1. Merry Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Joey Ramone (Phil Spector cover)

Honorable mention: Snoopy’s Christmas – The Royal Guardsmen

And this year

  1. Must Be Christmas – Blue Rodeo (The Band cover) (see above)
  2. Santa – Lightnin Hopkins (see above)
  3. Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem do Run Run Rudolph
  1. Little Drummer Boy/Silent Night/Auld Lang Syne – Jimi Hendrix, which is sadly not on YouTube but you can stream on Spotify.

  2. Merry Christmas, Baby – Bruce Springsteen (Otis Redding cover)

This is less a song and more a short play–the late great Stan Freberg’s Green Chri$tma$.

I’m pretty sure it’s just for nostalgia reasons, but I always loved:

Has a recurring main theme that builds with each pass.

And of course since I’m latino, two mandatory songs

The one you love to hate, but have to listen at every single family gathering.

And by far, one of the best spanish songs about x-mas ever:

*Edit: since the song is in spanish, I assume the joke will be lost in 99% of you guys, but the song is about a guy that broke up with his significant other for x-mas, the chorus goes something like this:

Fuck new years (the passing year)
Fuck new years (the new year)
Fuck the little tree
And fuck you.

*Translation note: he actually uses “me cago” that means “I shit on” but in Spanish the expression is akin to fuck you.

Oh dear, I forgot about White Wine in the Sun

I love this song. I’m not Australian so at first I didn’t understand what was up with white wine and sun but I get it now. I don’t know why it makes me choke up. It’s not any more or less emotional than most other xmas music but this one resonates with me specifically for some reason.

This album was a staple in my house growing up.

Taeyeon has a new XMas Album.

She couldn’t resist the Game of Thrones “Winter is Coming” title.

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire Walk with Me by Jherek Bischoff

Classic Christmas songs in the style of Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks score.

Not a song itself, but the story of a song:

Enjoy the latest broadcast from Sergei’s Catacomb of Classics where he presents an entire hour’s worth of knockoff cover songs from scummy, defunct album labels.

“I’m going Surfing for Xmas” by Mad Caddies, newly released. Also kudos in on the cover for the single, a parody of the NOFX EP Surfer, the cover of which itself is a parody of Bad Religion’s Suffer

I can listen to this without wanting to die. I’m not saying it’s amazing, but, listenable fits.

The top 5 list I posted above, and in the previous forum still stands.

Let’s just celebrate with an honorable mention.
